Computer, mobile phone or TV usage before bedtime can have an adverse affect on the way an individual falls asleep.

The National Sleep Federation’s Sleep in America poll found that 95% of participants used electronics before going to bed. Study task force member Charles Czeisler, Ph.D., M.D. said: “Artificial light exposure between dusk and the time we go to bed at night suppresses release of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, enhances alertness and shifts circadian rhythms to a later hour, making it more difficult to fall asleep.”

1 in 10 participants reported that they were woken up during the night by texts, phone calls or emails, with 20% of them saying it happens more than once a week.

Our Opinion:

We live in a modern age where being connected has become an integral part of our daily lives. A world without our gadgets, smartphones, computers & TVs could leave sleep as our only alternative.  Suitable sleep preparation should be the principle message to take away from this posting. We are not designed like our technological inventions that can switch off & on at a press of a button. Make your bed in the morning (it just feels better when you get into your bed the following night), freshen up, brush your teeth (a must!), wear appropriate clothing for the season, regularly change your bed clothes & have a read if you night quite ready to fall asleep.
